Professional Practice Mapping to the UK Professional Standards Framework at Descriptor 2

For Sandra Long

Areas of activity

Through a process of online discussions the group I have been working with have been setting up our Moodle page and adding different activities, literature and posing questions for students to respond to on discussion forums.  So far my group assignment has developed my skills in A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5.

After week 1 I have supported the learning by responding to the posts made in the induction activities and the discussion forums.  I, the group and participants have posted relevant literature to enable research, scholarship and evaluation of our professional practices.  At the end of week 2 and the beginning of week 3 at the end of our online seminar we will have reached the A3 and A4 descriptors having moderated and given feedback and support to our participants.  Are continuously evaluating throughout and will meet the criteria of descriptor A5 when the 2 week seminar has been completed.

In my professional practice I have also designed and planned my online course in India to teach and support students in their digital literacies skills  (descriptors V1, V2).  The same has occurred for this project which will meet all areas of activity  (A1-5) and Professional Values (V1-4) once complete.

Core Knowledge

In order to find out more about reaching students in online and blended education I have engaged with the reading lists and have read additional references from the posts made in the discussion forums.  I have also conducted literature searches to find out about research in this area. Key areas have been: asynchronous v synchronous discussions, different tools for online learning, surveys, effective teaching of online learners, supporting online and distance learners and managing student expectations of online learning.  At the same time I have been investigating tools for providing online webinars/seminars, blogs, chats, recording programmes including podcasts and editing video and audio for my professional practice. In the process I have looked at literature for this and have listened to podcasts from other professionals.  These activities have met descriptors K1, K2, K3, K4, K5 and V3. Hopefully these will be full met by the completion of the online seminars for the group assignment and also by the completion of my online seminars at work. My role in my professional practice includes advising on quality assurance and enhancement. Throughout the project I have checked the materials used for inclusion and equality and have discussed how the project will enhance the teaching and learning of online facilitators. These activities meet descriptor K6.

Professional Values

Part of my research has involved focusing on reaching the online learner. Looking at different types of learners who may participate in online or blended courses and much of the literature focuses on the Communities of Learning.  The literature has looked at how communities are created, supported and developed for access, engagement and retention.  By participating in related reading I have engaged with the design effects these areas and how support of students needs to be tailored for all learners. My own work includes one group of international students who study at an open distance learning centre. Nearer home and on campus these groups may or may not include disabled learners. Global/international education needs to be considered as there are time differences and cultural issues to consider.  This meets descriptors V1, V2 and V4.

In my professional practice I have also designed and planned my online course in India to teach and support students in their digital literacies skills  (descriptors V1, V2).  The same has occurred for this project which will meet all areas of activity  (A1-5) and Professional Values (V1-4) once complete.
